Raw and polished amber are forms of Baltic amber. There are a number of differences between them in terms of appearance and treatment process:

Amber in its natural state is known as raw amber. There is an earthy, coarse look to it, and its natural beauty remains untouched, compared to other types of stone. The raw amber is not subjected to any kind of treatment at all. Amber is a hard, rough, and dull substance on the surface. It is subjected to a polishing process from spending years tumbling in the sea. This smooths out the surface but still leaves it with a porous matte finish despite the fact that the surface has been smoothed. As a result of the porous surface, with which the amber is made, there is a greater surface area which allows for a greater amount of amber to be in contact with the skin.

Polishing

Amber polished to create a smooth, shiny surface has been created by polishing raw amber stone to create a smooth, shiny surface. Compared to raw amber, polished amber has smooth, even surfaces, resulting in a remarkable lustre, as opposed to the rough, uneven surfaces of raw amber. Amber that has been polished involves a stronger polishing process that removes all the oxidised amber from the outermost layer of the amber.  This results in a shiny, almost see-through amber bead. With a beautiful smooth shimmery finish, they glisten in the sunlight and have a very appealing glisten in the sun.

Therapeutic effects

Both raw and polished amber have the same amount of healing properties. It is often the preference of the individual which determines whether raw or polished amber should be chosen.  However, the raw variety is usually chosen due to its naturalness.
